Anyone who finds an M2V file on their computer has usually stumbled upon a relic from the DVD era. The file extension stands for MPEG2 video and refers to pure video data without an audio track. In the late 1990s, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) developed this standard, which quickly became the backbone of DVD technology. Every (video) DVD uses MPEG2, usually combined with separate audio files.
Today, MPEG-2 as a codec and M2V have fallen out of use. Modern players and smartphones expect containers such as MP4, which contain both audio and video data. Converting M2V to MP4 can help here. This makes the video file playable on (almost) all devices again.
Tip: if the M2V file comes from a DVD project, there is often a matching audio file in the same folder. You can upload the audio file as well, and your MP4 file will be created with sound. Without an additional audio file, a "proper" M2V file will unfortunately remain silent.
